Lavender Field Apartments, Bloomfield, CT: Integrated Affordable Housing with Supported Apartments for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Construction has commenced on Bloomfield Specialty Housing, one of two of Connecticut’s  first integrated rental development that includes specialized apartments for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (“IDD”).  This newly constructed two story building will have a total of 38 apartments of affordable housing, including 9 fully accessible apartments set aside for residents with IDD.

Developed in a joint venture between Regan Development and Favarh, the ARC of the Farmington Valley, the development is part of a brand new program in the State of Connecticut called the IDASH (Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder Housing Program).  The new program combines specialized financing from the State Departments of Housing, Developmental Services and the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority to make this integrated housing possible.  Regan Development is proud to be a pioneer developer in this effort, bringing specially designed apartments to a larger building, creating a sense of community for all of our residents.

Like its sister project in Canton, the 9 special needs apartments in Bloomfield will contain a number of features to foster independence for people with IDD, allowing lives in a less restrictive setting than might otherwise be possible.  From automatic door openers and hard surface LVT plank flooring for ease of access to specially designed kitchens and bathrooms with accessibility features, substantial thought has gone into the design of these apartments.  These apartments will also contain cutting edge “smart home” technology, including enhanced communications and video, lighting control and climate control.  Smart home technology will allow residents with IDD to live a more independent life in their community.

This two-story, single elevator building will also contain a community room for resident social and educational programming and on floor laundry rooms.   There will also be a dedicated office for building management and another for Favarh, who will coordinate social service supports for the special needs residents.

Regan Development is proud to lead this cutting edge redevelopment effort, including environmental cleanup of a long vacant site in Bloomfield.  The development will bring new life to a gateway site along Cottage Grove Road – and will bring important high rental quality housing to the Town of Bloomfield.
